Change of reference point [ENG/PL]

Do you like changing reference points? I very much do – over the past years I have been doing this mainly through working with consciousness in a broad sense. I have been teaching myself and others about information from the body and emotions so that we can make choices that support our freedom and increase our life satisfaction.

Today I want to tell you about how and why changing your focus helps you through crises. Let’s start with the basic principle of energy flow, which says that it flows where our attention is directed. This means that thinking about spending time doing things is the old paradigm of thinking about attention. The new paradigm is that we don’t spend time, but attention over time.

Quality of choices

Suppose you walk into a restaurant, sit down at a table, and take a final look at what’s on the menu. You see 10 appetizer options, and of those 10 options, the one that is right for you is the Kale and Pear Salad. I am fond of kale, which is probably why I am writing about this salad as the perfect starter for you.

OK, suppose you have only 3 main course options at the same restaurant, at the same table. One of those options is the same kale and pear salad. And still, out of the 3 options you decide on the same salad. By choosing that salad out of 3 rather than 10 options you usually feel more satisfied with your meal. How is this possible?

Psychology says that

The greater the opportunities, the less satisfaction we feel with the choice we make.

You don’t have to believe me. To see it in practice, all you have to do is install Tinder. At first, the ocean of possibilities that appears with the seemingly endless access to people willing to meet gives hope for the best possible choice… But is it really so?
Every user knows that after a while you don’t pay as much attention to looking through each profile. More often than not, you end up mindlessly moving your finger left and right across the screen, usually while sitting on the toilet. And even if you manage to patch things up with a super human, it’s no longer as satisfying. This dilution of options takes away from the value of each of them in a psychological sense, even though little actually changes.

And in the world we live in, where we are bombarded with stimuli from every direction, at every moment we have a choice as to what we direct our attention to. What takes us away from the satisfaction of the freedom available to us is that, for the most part, this is done outside of conscious, conscious choice, and the work of our minds is directed towards superficial, automatic choices.

Our greatest resource

The most important principle of energy flow places attention as the most important resource we have as humans.

The problem is that in the current education system we are not given any instruction on what to direct our attention to. This leads to mindless repetition of patterns and schemes imposed by culture and society. Don’t get me wrong, I think there is a lot of wisdom coming from culture, but I think it is worth questioning some things. We are not obliged to accept external programming as our own.

When I work with people, I often encounter a belief in my clients that they do not fit into the world in which they have been brought up. This often leads them to believe that there is something wrong with them. Because they don’t feel as others do, because they think differently, because deep down they want to live differently. In their own way. The sad thing is that these are usually highly sensitive people with a high level of empathy. Seeing so many of these kejiks makes me wonder how is it possible that we live in a society where we collectively believe that there is no such thing as complete happiness? And on top of that we are programmed to feel like victims of the circumstances we are in.

How do we get out of this?

The first aspect and step is to acknowledge your responsibility, for reality as you experience it. This is not the same as punishing yourself, beating your chest and shouting “my fault”, oh no. It is not about cultivating a sense of guilt that takes away creative power, the power to make healthy actions or choices. On the contrary.

To acknowledge responsibility is to accept that we have influence over our attentional processes. Full stop. And I understand that this may sound ridiculous, to say the least, to a person who has been brought up in the spirit that the world is not a friendly place, that we hurt each other and that suffering is the basis of our existence.

But if you think about it a little deeper, you will understand that while you may feel that life is not the life you chose, the rest is up to you. That is, the circumstances in which you came into the world are nothing but a platform on which you build your further choices.

Change the point at which you are

From an energy point of view, these circumstances constitute a field or matrix of reality that we are free to modify, by changing reference points. Changing reference points is not a purely intellectual process, it is a process that also involves, or perhaps even primarily involves emotions.

And here we get to another clue, how to work with emotions if we avoid feeling them. We run away from pain, we run away from experiencing it, anxiety is associated with it.

It is very simple, no one likes to be sad, depressed and experience emptiness. We can try to run away from these experiences, but in doing so we run away from the messages about our needs that come from them. We impoverish our lives and limit ourselves to functioning within a familiar framework. We stop growing and persist in our sphere of comfort.
We have many tools at our disposal to transform our lives, and one of the most versatile is meditation. You can read more about the benefits of meditation in my previous post: Benefits of meditation – why meditate.

Zmiana punktu odniesienia

A propos medytacji – medytujecie?? 🙂
