Dangers of doing a teacher training course in India [ENG/PL]

I get a lot of inquiries from you about yoga courses in India; about where it is worth doing them, where not, what are my recommendations. I think that it is such an individual choice and process that it makes no sense to recommend the right school for everyone. We are very different and it is beautiful. I was choosing through several factors: the program, location, price and whether women teach at school. As a female teacher, I did not want to support the patriarchal approach to yoga, which by definition is for everyone. There are also things I should have taken into consideration before going there for a TT, but I simply didn’t know. I want to share with you my experience, which might help you in avoiding unpleasant situations during this transformative process There are over 2,000 schools registered on paper in Rishikesh alone, and over 300 are actually functioning – so the choice is wide, the same as the variety of situations.

Price

While browsing different locations and course offers, we cannot deny, that prices in India are good in comparison to f.ex. Bali, US or Europe. However, you still have to be prepared for the fact that the price, to which is agreed before arrival may increase afterwards. This situation happened to me and Natalia when we came to Rishikesh. Firstly, it came out that our course would not take place in the school we chose (the process of “shifting” students between schools is quite common), but we considered it as a change in plus. Secondly, upon arrival, when registering, when we were to pay the previously agreed amount for the course, the teacher who received us demanded $ 500 more from each of us. If not for the fact that we had proof of previous arrangements in the form of an email, I do not know how it would end. I am very sensitive to fraud and I would simply give up, what would leave me without the accommodation and the training. And this is not a situation you want to experience in foreign country.

Conditions

It is worth checking your living conditions before paying the amount for the course. As you can guess, the curse of Instagram has also reached India, in which reality differs significantly from what is visible in the pictures. Very often the presented photos are from many years ago, while nobody refreshes the rooms in the meantime. The amount of students is so large that it is a really well organized business – not necessarily with care about the location or food served. On our TT, meals were brought from the Mother School, which was World Peace Yoga School. If you have no nutritional restrictions, there is a great chance that you will be quite satisfied with the dishes served – while for me (a vegan with numerous intolerances) I was treating food as a spiritual practice and simply fasted or went to eat elsewhere. This happens more and more often as time passes by – my tolerance to curry, rice and chapati (Indian bread) had decreased 🙂 At some point I even had a dream about hummus – and this was the moment when I started dining at the restaurants with great hummus. They make really good hummus in India!
From the delicious hummus let’s get to a slightly heavier topic, which is the guru/issue.

Teachers / “Guru”

Most people, who come to yoga courses are young women, and the teachers are usually Indian men. This creates a threat of being abused by teachers. Not only sexual, but also financial and energy abuse. Due to the fact that wherever there is some form of difference in power, space for abuse is created. One of the key principles in good yoga schools is rule that a teacher absolutely cannot date students during their training. As you can guess, for many people the rules are created in order to be broken. One of that people was Devesh, our alignment and hatha yoga teacher. The open secret at school was a fact that he was dating his students, although he did it very carefully so as not to leave any evidence. During my course, I heard about his 2 affairs with schoolgirls and I wouldn’t deal with gossip if Devesh wasn’t approaching me in that manner too (#metoo). I ignored all the red flags – rumors about the student he had abused in the previous course and his relationship with one of the girls in my group. And I didn’t really open my eyes until I found out that, despite all the romance in the background, he was in a committed relationship with his longtime partner. If you know me, you know about my ethics: I would never get into a relation with a person who is already committed. Devesh assured me he was just friends with his ex-girlfriend, which came out not to be true. This way, against my will, I was involved in a situation where another person was hurt – and it really hurt me as well.
I am a teacher myself and I know how students can put me as a guru in class. One of the most important things about being a teacher is never to abuse this position. This means maintaining ethical standards, humbleness and equal treatment for all students. He didn’t do that, favoring his chosen ones – including me.

I wasn’t the only person who felt the imperative to describe the experience with him. When he was exposed with his behavior by one of fellow students, he said that she was drugged and crazy. And everyone believed him.

As students, watch out for what you project on your teachers. It is very easy, especially in such a hierarchical culture, to fall into the trap that someone knows better than you what is good for you. This wasn’t the case here, but I have seen it happen too many times in order not to talk about this.

Quality

Competition on the market is high. Schools make their offer more attractive by adding additional modules, trainings and types of yoga. Additional certificates do not always mean that we would receive the highest quality education. I witnessed a teacher with no theoretical and practical background in sound healing, bought bowls and decided to organize Sound Healing courses. Guess who was that teacher? 🙂

In addition, the fact that the course is run by an Indian does not mean that it is a properly trained person. And even amazing poses and a large number of followers on instagram are not a guarantee of that. Yoga is not a circus. Buying Yoga Alliance certificates (200, 300 and 500 HR) is a known practice among Indians. The price for such paper is on average 30,000 INR, or about  400 Euro.

Sometimes the courses are organized on a more spontaneous basis, which means that teachers come from the so-called “round-ups” and you can see that they have no knowledge to teach anything. Our anatomy teacher at Rishikesh was a hit, and instead of telling us about bones, fascia and muscles, he philosophically quoted songs from The Passenger.

Of course, the teacher and teacher are not equal to each other, which means our Philosophy or Meditation Teachers were really splendid.

Number of hours and course participants

One of the big disappointments on the 300-hour course was the number of hours. If you want to avoid a situation in which, you will have to fight to maintain the standard – before starting the course, ask for a schedule and count how many hours your course should actually have.  All these situations happened to me at the beginning of my stay in India and I am glad that this was done in this order, because the school and courses I took at Goa raised the bar significantly. Trust your intuition – you really feel when you first contact the school whether it is run with heart or not. I noticed this difference at Kashish Yoga, where the Owner, Prateek watches over the contact with the students. If anything I have to recommend to you – it is this school, which has a branch in Rishikesh and is called Fusion Yoga. If you mention my name, you will get a discount – but don’t let that be the deciding factor in your choice.

I encourage you to share your experiences in India, in particular those regarding fraud and abuse. India is very colorful, which means that black is also exists there. Each meeting is a lesson and it depends on us what we take from the experiences we have. I hope this text helps you in being mindful about what is happening to you. If you are interested I might write another text on how to recognize a teacher, who is a predator. Be brave. Be you.

Taka sytuacja spotkała mnie i Natalię, gdy przyjechałyśmy do Rishikesh.

Nauczycielki i nauczyciele jogi

Oznacza to zachowanie standardów etycznych, pokory i równego traktowania wszystkich uczniów.

Podsumowanie: kurs jogi w Indiach
